Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
- 1/4 cup milk
- 3 to 4 cups powdered sugar (to desired consistency)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
- 1 cup chopped pecans, toasted (topping)
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (topping)
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup caramel sauce (topping)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 13×18-inch rimmed baking sheet (jelly roll pan) with nonstick spray or butter and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt. Set this aside as your dry base.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, cocoa powder, and water. Stir until the butter is melted and the mixture just begins to boil. Pour this hot mixture into your bowl of dry ingredients and stir until well combined.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the sour cream, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla extract. Add this to the chocolate batter and stir until smooth and glossy.
- Pour the batter into your prepared sheet pan and spread it evenly. Bake for 18–22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter with the cocoa powder and milk. Once smooth, remove from heat and whisk in the powdered sugar and vanilla until the frosting is pourable and slightly thick.
- As soon as the cake comes out of the oven, pour the warm frosting over the hot cake and spread evenly. Immediately sprinkle the toasted pecans and chocolate chips over the frosting. Then, drizzle the caramel sauce generously across the top.
- Let the cake cool slightly before slicing, but honestly—it’s irresistible while warm.
Notes
- This cake is best enjoyed warm, but can also be stored in an airtight container for a few days.
- Adjust the amount of powdered sugar in the frosting to achieve your desired consistency.
