Description

A delicious layered lasagna featuring ground beef and pork with a rich tomato sauce and creamy cheeses.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 24 oz canned tomato sauce
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook Meat Mixture:
In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic; sauté until translucent. Add the ground beef and pork to the skillet, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Prepare Sauce:
Stir in the tomato sauce and tomato paste into the meat mixture. Add dried oregano and basil. Simmer on low heat for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Cook Lasagna Noodles:
While the sauce simmers, cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  5. Prepare Cheese Mixture:
In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, eggs, and half of the Parmesan cheese. Mix well and set aside.
  6. Assemble Lasagna:
Spread a ladleful of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9×13 inch (23×33 cm) baking dish. Place a layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce. Spread a layer of the ricotta mixture over the noodles. Add a layer of the meat sauce. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers (noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, mozzarella) and finish with a layer of noodles topped with meat sauce.
  7. Top and Bake:
Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the top. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.

Notes

  • Let the lasagna stand for 15 minutes before cutting to allow it to set.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine to the sauce while it simmers.
  • Fresh herbs can be added for a more robust flavor.
  • Use no-boil noodles for a quicker assembly time.
  • For a creamier texture, add a layer of béchamel sauce before the cheese layer.
