Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 egg
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 gingerbread cookie for decoration
- Optional: whipped cream or frosting for decoration
- Optional: edible decorations like sprinkles or candy
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking pan and line it with parchment paper for easy removal. - Mix Dry Ingredients
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside. - Cream Butter and Sugar
In a separate large bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the molasses and vanilla extract and mix well. - Add Egg
Beat in the egg until fully incorporated. - Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined. - Bake the Cake
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. - Cool the Cake
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. - Decorate
Once cooled, spread a layer of whipped cream or frosting on top of the cake. Decorate with a gingerbread cookie in the center and add any additional edible decorations as desired.
Notes
- For a more intense ginger flavor, increase the ground ginger to 1 1/2 teaspoons.
- Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature before mixing for a smoother batter.
- Use freshly grated nutmeg for a richer flavor.
- The decoration can be customized for any festive occasion by changing up the colors and shapes of the frosting and candies.
